About Alden Wildlife Management Area

Located in Erie County, New York, Alden Wildlife Management Area (WMA) covers diverse habitats including wetlands, open fields, and mixed hardwood forests. The area was acquired by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation primarily to protect waterfowl habitats and support migratory birds. Alden WMA plays a vital role in preserving local biodiversity by maintaining wetlands and grasslands that serve as breeding grounds and stopover points for numerous species such as ducks, geese, wild turkeys, and white-tailed deer. Recreational opportunities focus mainly on wildlife hunting, birdwatching, and photography, with well-maintained access for waterfowl hunting in season and hiking through patches of forest and grassland. Though there are no developed campgrounds or extensive trail systems, the area’s flat terrain and open spaces invite visitors seeking quiet, off-trail exploration, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when bird activity peaks. Historically, portions of the land were agricultural fields that have been restored to native habitat to improve ecological function. Its proximity to Buffalo and the Great Lakes adds to its significance as a wetland refuge in a largely developed region. Alden Wildlife Management Area is especially popular in fall and spring due to migratory bird presence and hunting seasons. The area contributes to regional conservation efforts by preserving natural wetlands amidst agricultural and suburban landscapes, providing critical habitat connectivity.
